[...] Joel Minty added an interesting post on Gamegasm: Next Gen AliensHere’s a small excerptAnd all I can think is what if they had designed an Alien game that formatted along the lines of Left 4 Dead?
Tell 'em, Gavin. It's all about atmosphere. Smoke, hissing, weird noises, acid blood, stuff beeping rapidly and enemies on the ceiling.

I prefer to think of Alien and Aliens being the only two movies in the series. Alien3 was passable but ultimately flawed compared to its predecessors. Alien: Resurrection was nothing but a bad dream that I had back in 1997. Much like Rocky V, the movie doesn't actually exist. It's an urban legend told to moviemakers of what happens when hubris and budget get in the way of plot, script, and preparation.

The Alien movies are a source of eternal frustration when it comes to video gaming. Alien 3 was released for the SNES and was utter garbage, as was the original comic-book style Alien vs Predator. Alien vs Predator for the Jaguar was interesting and had good graphics for its time, but was supremely difficult to control given its bulky controller. The Alien .WAD for DOOM was completely fantastic, but seemed more evolutionary than revolutionary, given that it was just a series of skins and user-designed levels in the DOOM game. Tense and enjoyable, but left you wanting more.

The first Alien vs Predator for the PC really ratcheted up the action and suspense, and the second one just added to that. Both were great games.

Aliens (the movie) cured my erectile dysfunction and restored peace to East Timor, so I'm confident that with a competent developer and a movie purist as a designer, the game will be a great, tense FPS. Hopefully they can take enough creative liberty with it to fully encapsulate the action scenes without adding in hours of pointless "run, strafe, shoot" of random aliens that appear. Regardless, given my obsession with Aliens, it will not be game over man, game over, until I'm done.

I was never caught up in the whole Alien phenomenon, but the quality of writing of the article and the blatant passion of the author have me more than convinced to give the game a shot. Plus I'm a whore for any new FPS for the PC.
